Developing Curriculum Themes by Month
Creating monthly themes is another way to structure your curriculum. January could focus on New Year’s resolutions and reflection. In February, use themes about Valentine’s Day to teach kindness and friendship.
March might center around Dr. Seuss and reading. Use fun activities to promote literacy. In April, consider spring and plants to engage students in hands-on learning about nature.
For May, do a unit on Mother’s Day or flowers to inspire creativity. June can celebrate summer and vacation planning. Each month you choose should connect with your students’ experiences and interests.
July could be about America, and August could focus on back to school topics. September is a great month to focus on STEM and the remainder of the year in October, November, and December have tons of great holidays to use in your theming!
Creating Thematic Lesson Plans
Creating thematic lesson plans have always been one of my favorite ways to plan out learning at our house! For our learning at home activities, I picked a central theme for the week and then used that to build my activities around it.

Educational Activities and Engagement
Engaging students through themed activities can enhance their learning experience. This includes hands-on projects and exploration activities that relate to each theme, helping to reinforce concepts and skills.
Hands-On and Sensory Activities
Hands-on activities are vital for active learning. They allow you to create a tangible connection with the material. You might set up a gardening project to explore plants and their growth. Use seeds, soil, and pots to plant vegetables or flowers.
Sensory activities also play a role in learning. Set up a nature table with items like leaves and rocks. Use this for exploring the five senses by asking, “What does it feel like?” or “What sound does it make?”
Arts and crafts can support your themes effectively. You can create art projects related to space by making a solar system model or a zoo diorama with animal figures. These activities improve fine motor skills while making learning fun.

Theme-Related Learning and Exploration
Theme-related activities help you dive deeper into each subject. For example, when focusing on transportation, you can explore different vehicles. Create a simple craft where children use recyclable materials to design their own cars or planes.
For a weather theme, have students use images or drawings to depict the different conditions. You could also discuss arctic animals and how they adapt to their environment.
Excursions can further enhance engagement. A trip to the zoo or to a nearby farm provides real-life connections to what they have learned. Even virtual tours can be beneficial.
Incorporating games and sports into themes also boosts engagement. You can create friendly competitions related to topics like the Olympics, combining physical activity with learning.
