Why Harry Potter Makes a Fun Party Theme
If you are a fan of Harry Potter, you know that the world of Harry Potter is vast and complex. It is a world that has captured the imagination of millions of people all over the world. There are a variety of characters and environments throughout the book to explore during your learning party, and it is a great way to expand on subjects that your children are interested in.
The World of Harry Potter
The world of Harry Potter is a magical one, full of wonder and mystery. It is a world where wizards and witches live and attend school at Hogwarts. Hogwarts is a magical castle located in Scotland that serves as the primary setting for the series. The castle is divided into four houses: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin. Each house has its own unique qualities and traits that define its members.
Key Characters and Houses
The Harry Potter series is full of memorable characters, each with their own unique personalities and backstories. Harry Potter is the main character of the series, a young wizard who attends Hogwarts and battles the evil Lord Voldemort. Other key characters include Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Albus Dumbledore, and Severus Snape.
Each house is known for its own unique qualities and traits. Gryffindor is known for its bravery and courage, Ravenclaw for its intelligence and wit, Hufflepuff for its loyalty and kindness, and Slytherin for its ambition and cunning.
When we have Harry Potter Learning Activity parties, we like designating different areas of the house like different areas from the movie:
- Great Hall – Area where you’ll be eating or doing table activities.
- Potions Class – Area where you can mix potions together and make a bit of a fun science-y mess!
- Charms Class – You’ll want space here to practice your spells!
- Magical Creatures Class – Some where you can hide some magical creatures, and also have some flat surface to open up some Playfoam Pals or other surprise box item.
- Diagon Alley – This can be where people pick up their supplies for the party!
- Daily Prophet – Make a “newspaper” that highlights the different activities you’ll be doing at the party!
- Platform 9 3/4 – Use this as your theme for your front door area, or where people will be entering for the party.
- Hagrid’s Hut – Create a conversation space with comfortable seating and this can be your Hagrid’s Hut area!
- Forbidden Forest – We always used this to mark any “off limits” areas, or to label the outside space at our house.
Use a sorting hat quiz to figure out what house everyone in your party is a part of and have them make a fun tote or patch that represents their house allegiance.

Making Your Own Potions
We created these potions jars using glass jars we had around the house and some labels that I printed off at home. They are available in various sizes and shapes on Amazon. You can download the potion bottle labels that we used for our potions below!
We used a variety of items to fill the jars, focusing on different shapes and textures:
- Water beads
- Plastic snakes
- Colored sand
- Slime
- Household ingredients for experiments – water, oil, baking soda, vinegar
When we have one of our movie parties, we incorporate activities from the movie theme that encourage creativity and critical thinking.
For our Harry Potter movie party, we watched the Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets on a rainy day that was perfect to be indoors! We use a bit of science and items around our house to create some magic!

Potions Class Experiments
Use science principles to create interesting reactions during your very own potions class! During potions class at our last party, we used this Science Magic kit that focused on the properties of liquids and light refraction.
The light bends around the object… and it magically “disappears”! This is a great experiment to talk about the properties of water and liquids.
I found this kit on clearance at Hobby Lobby, but you can also find similar items on Amazon!
Another science experience idea to use for potions class is using baking soda and vinegar to create a reaction. I had the girls add their mixture as they said their spell, and they magically created their very own fizzy creation!
Magical Creatures Class Ideas
In magical creatures class, you can include everything from cute plushies that are hidden and the kids need to find all of the magical creators around the house. And we enjoyed using Playfoam Pals hidden character sets to find magical creatures inside of the Playfoam too!
Harry Potter Craft Activities
The girls also made their own “Spell Books” and we had a quick Charms class where they could practice their incantations! (Which involved me tossing things into the air a lot!)
This helped them practice their writing and drawing skills, and they also were able to use a good bit of imagination as they came up with their own spells!
We had a great time celebrating Harry Potter and it’s always great to mix some pretend play with learning activities!

Other times that we have had our Harry Potter movie parties, we have incorporated items like butter beer, chocolate frogs, and even Bertie Bott’s every flavor beans! If you have house robes, you can wear those while completing your activities and it is an all around fun time.
