Creating Your First Digital Product

By Diana Leave a Comment

Digital products have become a fun part of my business suite and a growing revenue line as well! The past few years, I’ve loved learning more about automation and creating this new type of passive income.

Some of the information below includes affiliate links. When you click these links I may make a commission from your purchase. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

Creating your first digital product might seem a little intimidating at first, especially if you’re managing a busy household, running a blog, or just trying to carve out time in your day. But here’s the good news: you don’t need a design degree or a massive following to get started. You just need a great idea and the motivation to share something helpful.

Whether you’re a blogger, small business owner, or just someone who enjoys creating, this guide will walk you through the steps to successfully make and launch your very first digital product.

If you’re interested in starting to create your own digital products, I highly recommend checking out a free 3-day webinar by James Wedmore all about “Creating Your First Digital Product”! He will be walking you through, step by step, how to get started with digital products.

If you’re looking for some additional resources to get started, don’t forget to sign up for the free webinar with additional information and inspiration on how to get started.

Digital Product Quick Start Checklist

I’ve got a quick start list below to get you started, and the “Creating Your First Digital Product” webinar will be a great step to grow this area of your business.

Use the steps below to get started with digital products! And then don’t forget to check out the webinar for more information!

Step 1: Identify a Problem You Can Solve

The best digital products are the ones that help others solve a problem, save time, or stay organized. Start by asking yourself:

  • What do people often ask me for advice about?
  • What do I already create or use in my own life that others might benefit from?
  • Is there a need or gap in my niche that I could fill?

Popular ideas include printable planners, checklists, activity packs, or simple guides. The key is to keep it simple and focused—your first product doesn’t need to be perfect or complex.

Step 2: Decide on the Format

There are many types of digital products to choose from, and you’ll want to select a format that suits both your content and your audience.

Some common digital product types include:

  • Printable planners and checklists
  • eBooks or mini-guides
  • Budget or schedule spreadsheets
  • Journals or workbooks
  • Templates (emails, social media, etc.)

Choose the format that makes sense for the content you’re delivering and is easy for your audience to use.

Step 3: Create Your Product

Now it’s time to bring your product idea to life. Fortunately, there are plenty of user-friendly tools available to help you get started, even if you’re not a designer.

Recommended tools:

  • Canva – great for printables, journals, and planners
  • Google Docs or Slides – perfect for writing and simple layouts
  • Google Sheets or Excel – ideal for checklists, trackers, and budgeting tools

When creating your product, focus on making it clear, helpful, and easy to use. Make sure it’s visually appealing and organized in a way that makes sense.

Step 4: Package and Deliver It

Once your product is complete, export it in a format that makes it easy to share, typically a PDF for printables and guides or a spreadsheet format for trackers and planners.

Then choose how you’ll deliver or sell your product. If it’s a free download, you can use your email provider to send it to subscribers. If you plan to sell it, try platforms like:

  • Gumroad
  • SendOwl
  • Payhip
  • Etsy
  • Your own blog or Shopify store

Be sure to include a clear title, description, and a few images to showcase what your product includes.

Step 5: Promote Your Product

Now that your product is created and ready to go, let people know about it! Promote it through your blog, email newsletter, and social media channels.

Ideas for promotion:

  • Write a blog post that introduces the product and explains how it helps
  • Share behind-the-scenes or “sneak peek” photos on Instagram or Facebook
  • Create a video walkthrough or demo
  • Add it to your site menu or sidebar
  • Include it in your email opt-in or lead magnet

Don’t be afraid to talk about it more than once. Repetition helps your audience remember that your product is available.

Adding in Digital Products

Creating your first digital product is a rewarding experience. Not only does it allow you to share your knowledge or creativity, but it also opens the door to new opportunities like passive income, email list growth, and stronger engagement with your audience.

The most important thing is to start small and stay consistent. Continually add new products and lead magnets that bring people to your business. With each product you create, you’ll grow more confident in your ability to serve your community with helpful, valuable resources.
