We are ready to dive in to summer and I’m looking forward to being able to spend more time with my kids! In the summer, I love working on summer learning activities together – and even though they are older now and that may look a little different, I still love incorporating a lot of art, STEM, and hands on time together. (And they do also spend time on their electronics, building worlds in Minecraft and creating songs in Flat.io as well!) Creating these memories together is something that brings me great enjoyment, and I hope they look back on it fondly one day as well!

As a disclaimer we don’t play board games every single night, but we have found an affinity for certain types of games when we are in the mood to play a game. My favorite types of games to incorporate into our summer learning are CARD games! One of our favorites is Personalogy, something that I quite frequently bring to the dinner table to ask everyone a few questions before we head to our after dinner activities!
Personalogy is a discovery game for the whole family, and I love this one because it poses sometimes silly questions and you get a response from everyone at the table. This is a great way to start a conversation, delve into topics we wouldn’t have otherwise started talking about, and learning new favorites about your family members. We received this from the developers when they were launching this game, but it is also one of our most used family activity items to date!
I personally use Personalogy a few cards at a time, particularly at dinner time about every other week or so, to check and give everyone a topic to connect on. You could create a more formal structure around using the cards, or keep it casual how I’ve opted to. That’s what I love about it, is the cards are really just a tool to use them how you best see fit, to open up more conversations with your family. The creators of the card game have moved on to an enlightenment style Joy Cards built to lift spirits, and would make a great gift for adults as well.
Like I mentioned, we love card games. So our other favorite is also card based.
Another card game favorite (especially for our 11 year old) is Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza – this viral hit game is I’m sure in many of your homes and you’re already familiar with it, but if you have a younger child rising into the tween ages, expect this one to be a gift for a birthday or holiday soon! We have multiple versions of this and they all get played! It’s a fast moving card game that is lots of fun, easy to follow, and a hit to bring in to classroom parties as well.
For more traditional board games, we have a variety of options. Some of our favorites include Otrio, a fast moving 3D tic tac toe game, Clue the Haunted Mansion edition (we love a great game of Who Dun It!), and Disney Pictopia, a game that allows us to flex our Disney Trivia muscles. Otrio, Personalogy, Upwords, and Green Team Wins were all received complimentary for review.
Green Team Wins allows you to come up with answers that you think the majority of the room will answer and then as your join the majority, everyone comes together on the Green Team. Upwords is fantastic for avid readers that have a wide vocabulary to be able to use their word knowledge to stack off of words already on the board!
